Embracing Your Calling

There is a significant difference between a job, a profession and a calling.  All of us want to find our calling---that place where what we do best and what we love to do intersect. Many have given up hope of ever finding that “sweet spot.”  Most have accepted their fate as “reality”, that while it may be possible for some to embrace their calling, for them that opportunity is a pipe dream.

Although every calling has seasons of tedious routine (the job part) and every calling has a learning curve (the profession part), I think it’s possible to find our niche in life…a place to flourish and make an impact in the lives of others (a calling).

Why do I wholeheartedly believe that?  As you examine options in front of you, ask yourself 3 questions that are critical in opening this new chapter of your life.  Once you answer  “Yes” to these questions, you have taken the biggest step in securing a bright future for you and your family.

Do You WANT to do this?  When you’re called to do something significant, there is a stirring, a desire---even a growing passion---to get moving.  There is an attitude of “whatever it takes, I’ll do it.”  Certainly a spark of optimism comes, but it’s more than that.  You can actually picture yourself doing it and being successful.  Moreover, when you do, there is an enthusiasm that grows.  You find yourself proud to be associated with the work and believe you are making a difference!  After evaluating the opportunity if you find yourself “dead” emotionally…I believe you are not called.  It may be a job, eventually a profession, but it is not a calling…where personal peace and measurable productivity grow.  Bottom line is that every calling has an inward passion.  The key question is this:  Do you WANT to do it?
Do You have the ABILITY?  Do you have the talent to accomplish the task?  A litmus test to determine your ability is this:  Do those that know you best---your family and friends---believe you can succeed in the venture?  Passion and ability complete two-thirds of the “calling equation.”  There is one more.
3.Do you have an OPPORTUNITY?  There must be a platform that is legitimate (a door must be opened) for you to exercise your passion and talent!  In summary, all three ingredients:  passion, ability and opportunity must come together for a “Yes!” to calling.
